Abstract

Utilizing wood gas in heat and power production is recognized for more than 150 years. Throughout the history, its popularity has fluctuated with the availability of cheaper and more efficient fossil fuels. Over the last decades, the concern for sustainable environment and finding alternative energy sources has increased the interest in wood gas and other biomass-derived fuels. A group of Finnish researchers wants to apply wood gas in microbiological methane production. To achieve this, enhancement in gas quality is required, which leads to the use of oxygen-enrichment. In this thesis, the initial design for gasification unit is made. The unit consists of a gasifier and the necessary equipment for gas cleaning and conditioning. Evaluation is carried out through building a prototype gasification unit and conducting tests on it. In addition to literature research, experience of experts and computer aided design software are used in both design and fabrication phases. Besides choosing the right type of gasifier and modifying it to meet the requirements, this thesis also discusses material selection, manufacturing and assembling techniques, running the process, and troubleshooting. The aim of this thesis is to create a good base for further development and research. The emphasis is on gasifier flexibility in terms of changing process dependent components. Pointing out the major issues in manufacturing is covered as well.
