Experimental animated documentary: Space-time conservation of a house

Abstract

Animation is a potential medium to go inside the inner world of the author and of space and time. From the author’s perspective, working with the animation medium–animating, is to work on a time-machine which can control the audience’s time and experience. Combining these concepts with the field of art conservation an area the author has been interested in, this thesis aims to use his understanding of animation, his proficiency of animation practice, and his knowledge of art conservation to freshly find an alternative way to conserve time and space of the author’s house. The concept of cultural material conservation was studied and shaped the author’s animation practice.

The Announced Tragedy, a 10-minute animation and an exhibition, accompanied by produced animation projects during the author’s master’s degree formed the practical part of this thesis. The written part of the dissertation is a product of his personal testament integrated with a qualitative research method applied on artworks, texts, images as well as his family material.
