Abstract

This thesis aims to understand the factors contributing to the decline or failure of family businesses as ownership passes to the third generation and beyond. The research methodology involves a review of existing academic literature on generational transitions in family businesses and the challenges faced by the third generation. The main findings of the thesis highlight the importance of succession planning, clear governance structures, and the ability to adapt to changing market conditions in overcoming the third-generation curse. The study also emphasizes the need for professionalization and the incorporation of external expertise to revitalize family businesses and ensure their long-term sustainability.

Tässä työssä pyritään selvittämään niitä tekijöitä, jotka vaikuttavat perheyritysten jatkuvuuden katkeamiseen ja epäonnistumiseen, kun omistus siirtyy kolmannelle sukupolvelle ja sen yli. Tutkimusmenetelmänä käytetään olemassa olevan akateemisen kirjallisuuden tarkastelua perheyritysten sukupolvien välisistä siirtymistä ja kolmannen sukupolven kohtaamista haasteista. Tutkimuksen keskeiset havainnot korostavat sukupolvenvaihdosten suunnittelun, selkeiden hallintorakenteiden muodostamisen ja muuttuviin markkinaolosuhteisiin sopeutumisen merkitystä kolmannen sukupolven kirouksen selättämisessä. Lisäksi tutkimus korostaa ammattimaisen toiminnan ja ulkoisen asiantuntemuksen roolia perheyritysten elvyttämisessä ja niiden pitkäaikaisen kestävyyden varmistamisessa.
