Assessment of the business potential for different technical implementations of a shallow geothermal energy concept integrated with district heating network

Abstract

The city of Helsinki has set a goal to generate 15 % of its heating demand with geothermal energy by 2030. In Helsinki, district heating is the most common heating method and had a 93 % market share in 2019. Therefore, shallow geothermal energy is evaluated as a thermal load for district heating network from which it can be supplied citywide. The studied system consists of a modular heat pump station with district heat connection and ground heat exchangers. Furthermore, air-cooled heat exchangers and district cooling return water were considered as additional technologies to increase the flexibility of the system as well as charge the borehole thermal energy storage. In this master’s thesis, six different technical configurations were studied by measuring their profitability as being a part of the energy company Helen’s future heat production profile. The characteristics of the energy field were analysed in co-operation with a consultant to find the optimal borehole depth, borehole distance and energy field design. To find the optimal location for the operation, topographic database was accessed to study the city’s geothermal features and available areas. The results were obtained using Energy Optima 3 optimization software and used to finally perform the cash flow analysis for each technical configuration. The results of this master’s thesis indicated the most profitable borehole depth to be 400 meters, distance 20 meters, and energy field shape a line field. With this configuration, most energy was obtained in relation to the investment cost. The highest profit was reached with the technical configuration where on top of geothermal energy, air-cooled heat exchangers were used to create an additional heat load to the district heating network and district cooling was charged into the borehole thermal energy storage. However, based on the optimization results, the reached benefit was insufficient compared to the relatively high investment cost of the system, concluding in unprofitable results in the performed cash flow analysis. As a conclusion, it can be stated that the system is not profitable with this method and current costs.

Helsingin kaupunki on asettanut tavoitteen tuottaa 15 % kaupungin kiinteistöjen lämmityksen tarpeesta geotermisellä energialla vuoteen 2030 mennessä. Helsingissä kaukolämpö on yleisin lämmitysmuoto. Esimerkiksi vuonna 2019 sen markkinaosuus oli 93 %. Tässä diplomityössä matalaa geotermistä energiaa arvioidaan osaksi kaukolämmön tuotantoa, jotta tätä uusiutuvaa lämpöä voitaisiin toimittaa kaupungin mittakaavassa. Tutkittu systeemi koostuu modulaarisesta lämpöpumppukontista, kaukolämpöverkkokytkennästä ja energiakaivoista. Lisäksi katolle asennettavia ilmakeräimiä sekä kaukojäähdytystä arvioidaan lisälämmönlähteinä osana laitosta tuomaan joustavuutta ja mahdollistamaan lämmön kausivaraston hyödyntämisen. Tutkielmassa kuusi erilaista teknillistä vaihtoehtoa arvioitiin kannattavuudeltaan osana Helenin energiajärjestelmän pitkän tähtäimen suunnitelmaa. Energiakentän ja porakaivojen fysikaalista käyttäytymistä arvioitiin yhteistyössä konsultin kanssa. Tuloksena saatiin arvio optimaalisesta porakaivon syvyydestä, energiakaivojen välimatkasta sekä energiakentän muodosta. Optimaalisen sijainnin löytämiseksi hyödynnettiin kaupungin topografista tietokantaa. Teknillisten vaihtoehtojen lähtötiedot syötettiin Energy Optima 3 -ohjelmistoon, joka optimoi laitoksen tuotannon jokaiselle tunnille huomioiden esimerkiksi sähkönhintaennusteet sekä muiden tuotantomenetelmien kannattavuudet. Lopuksi optimointituloksista saatuja energianhankintahyötyjä käytettiin kannattavuuslaskelmissa jokaiselle vaihtoehdolle. Tämän diplomityön tulosten perusteella kannattavin energiakaivon syvyys on 400 metriä, kaivojen etäisyys 20 metriä ja energiakentän muoto linjakenttä. Tällä asetelmalla eniten geotermistä energiaa pystyttiin keräämään kaivoista suhteellisesti pienimmällä investointikustannuksella. Korkein tuotto saatiin kuudennella teknillisellä vaihtoehdolla, jossa geotermisen energian lisäksi ilmakeräimillä tuotettiin lisälämpöä kaukolämpöverkkoon, sekä kaukojäähdytyksen paluuveden lämpöä käytettiin kausivaraston lataamiseen. Kannattavuuslaskelmista kuitenkin ilmeni, että optimointien perusteella saatu energiahankinnan hyöty ei ollut riittävä suhteessa korkeisiin investointikustannuksiin, minkä takia NPV luvut jäivät negatiivisiksi kaikille vaihtoehdoille. Lopputuloksena laitos ei siis ole kannattava tällä metodilla eikä nykyisillä investointikustannuksilla.
