Abstract

Empirical and semi-empirical estimation methods are used for a wide variety of applications in remote sensing to make predictions about variables of interest on a target area, e.g. total stem volume of a forest. The methods often use machine learning principles to iteratively produce estimates based on sets of training reference data. One of the two goals of this thesis was to develop and evaluate a grid-based approach to iteratively improve the reference data used for estimation. The approach is based on a probability estimation method developed at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The work consists of designing a grid-sampling scheme for reference data and satellite images, and creating an iterative work-flow that produces estimates and new reference data by interpreting satellite images with the probability estimation method. The second goal was to design and implement a computer information system for VTT to function as a centralized location to store and serve grid-sampled reference data and remote sensing data. The system has a web user interface and an application programming interface, and is built on the Python Django web framework. It can be deployed on a modular Docker architecture. For evaluation and demonstration of both goals, the computer information system was used to implement an accuracy assessment of the developed approach. Several estimation cases were generated and compared to validation data. Data collected from an area around Juupajoki in Finland were used. The results show that the bias of estimates could be reduced from -9.7 % to -6.2 % by using the processed reference data in training compared to using the initial reference data, while error remained relatively same. The results also show that grid-sampling the data in training does not significantly increase bias or error in the produced estimates.

Empiirisiä ja puoliempiirisiä estimointimenetelmiä käytetään laajalti eri kaukokartoituksen sovelluksissa kohdemuuttujien, kuten runkotilavuus, ennustamiseen kohdealueella. Kyseiset menetelmät hyödyntävät usein koneoppimista estimaattien tuottamiseen opetusdatan avulla. Ensimmäinen tämän työn kahdesta päätaivoitteesta oli kehittää hilaan perustuva lähestymistapa, jossa pyritään parantamaan estimoinnissa käytettäviä referenssitietoja iteratiivisesti, ja arvioida sen tarkkuutta. Tämä lähestymistapa pohjautuu Teknologian Tutkimuskeskus VTT:n kehittämään todennäköisyysestimointimenetelmään. Työ sisältää hilapohjaisen näytteenottotekniikan kehittämisen referenssitiedoille ja satelliittikuville, sekä iteratiivisen toimintamallin suunnittelun estimaattien ja referenssitietojen tuottamiselle tulkitsemalla satelliittikuvia e.m. todennäköisyysestimointimenetelmällä. Toinen päätavoite oli suunnitella ja toteuttaa VTT:n käyttöön tietojärjestelmä, joka toimii keskitettynä tidonsäilytyspaikkana hilaan näytteistetyille referenssi- ja kaukokartoitustiedoille. Järjestelmällä on web-pohjainen käyttöliittymä sekä ohjelmointirajapinta ja se perustuu Python-kielen Django-sovelluskehykseen. Järjestelmä toimii modulaarisen Docker-arkkitehtuurin päällä. Molempien päätavoitteiden arvioimiseksi ja demonstroimiseksi tietojärjestelmällä toteutettiin kehitetyn hilaan perustuvan lähestymistavan tarkkuusarvioinnin, jossa lukuisia estimaatteja laskettiin kahden iteraation aikana ja verrattiin validointitietoihin. Koealueeksi valittiin Juupajoen ympäristö. Tulosten mukaan harhaa voitiin vähentää -9.7 %:sta -6.2 %:iin käyttämällä opetukseen prosessoituja referenssitietoja alkuperäisten sijaan, virheen pysyessä suhteellisen muuttumattomana. Tulosten perusteella hilanäytteistys ei myöskään lisää estimaattien harhaa tai virhettä merkittävästi.
