Abstract

Opinnäytteessäni pohdin kuinka mikroskoopilla kuvaamaani videomateriaalia lupiinista voisi tuoda esille näyttelyn kontekstissa, ja millaisia tunteita ja mielikuvia se katsojassa herättää. Taustoituksena pohdin biotaiteen avainkysymyksiä, ja koitan saada siitä laajemman kokonaiskuvan. Opinnäytteessä on neljä lähestymissuuntaa, oma taiteellinen produktioni, näyttelykävijän kokemus, haastateltujen taiteilijoiden tietämys ja lähdekirjallisuus. Tutkielman ensimmäisessä osiossa, avaan biotaidetta lähdekirjallisuuden ja taiteilijahaastatteluiden kautta. Haen mahdollisia määritelmiä biotaiteelle, sekä pohdin biotaiteen lähtökohtia ja luonnetta, biotaiteilijan ja hänen elollisen materiaalinsa uniikkia suhdetta ja biotaiteen esittämistä näyttelyssä. Opinnäytteen toisessa osassa työskentelen mikroskoopin kanssa ja teen prototyypin näyttelykonseptista. Kolmannessa osassa toteutan kävijöillä kyselyn, jonka avulla selvitän heidän mielleyhtymiään ja kokemuksiaan/tunteitaan katsoessaan mikroskooppivideota, ja reflektoin heidän ajatuksiaan ja heille avautuvia maailmoja. Pohdin myös voiko tämän tyylinen abstraktinakin tulkittava aineisto olla itsessään taidetta, vai kaipaako se aina laajemman kontekstin. Lisäksi reflektoin koko prosessiani biotaiteen kysymysten kontekstista sekä omaa taiteellista työskentelyäni.

In my thesis, I explore how the video footage of a lupine captured with a microscope could be presented in the context of an exhibition, and what kinds of feelings and thoughts it evokes in the viewer. As background research, I ponder some of the key questions in bioart and attempt to gain a broader understanding of the field. The thesis has four approaches: my own artistic production, the experience of exhibition visitors, the knowledge of the artists interviewed, and source literature. In the first section of the thesis, I explore bioart through literature and artist interviews. I look for possible definitions to bioart and think about the origins and nature of bioart, the unique relationship between a bioartist and their living material, and how bioart is presented in exhibition. In the second part of the thesis, I work with a microscope and create a prototype for an exhibition concept. In the third part, I conduct a survey among exhibition visitors to find out their associations and experiences/feelings when viewing the microscope video, and contemplate their thoughts and the worlds that open up to them. I also consider whether this type of abstract material can be considered as art in itself, or whether it always requires a broader context. In addition, I reflect on my entire process in the context of bioart and my own artistic work.
