Abstract

In this bachelor’s thesis, I examine my personal relationship with cinematography and explore how the Japanese philosophy of ikigai can support a cinematographer’s work and life. I reflect on how the core principles of ikigai; such as presence, growth, and a sense of community can strengthen professional identity and deepen one’s connection to creative practice. I approach the topic from a personal perspective, reflecting on my own journey as a cinematographer and considering how the ikigai mindset can help maintain a sense of meaning even in changing and demanding work environments. My aim is to explore how the philosophy’s teachings can enhance well-being, creativity, and resilience within artistic work. This thesis is both a professional and personal exploration, in which ikigai serves as a framework for understanding the value of creative work and the significance of artistic process. Through this perspective, I seek to articulate how the work of a cinematographer can be more than a technical execution. How it can become a way of living, growing, and experiencing connection with oneself, with others, and with the surrounding world.
