Abstract
Despite the continuing interest in other methods of distortion (e.g. deconstruction), anamorphosis has been completely disregarded by the practitioners of fashion and clothing design. It, therefore, offers an unexplored potential in the field. The purpose of the study is to detect, explore and assess the potential approaches and methods for integration of anamorphosis into the fashion design process and pieces of clothing. By analyzing the outcomes of the utilized procedures, the thesis aims to answer whether anamorphosis can be used as a viable tool in a fashion design process. A fragment of the data gathered with theoretical and practical research is utilized and showcased in the collection of seven outfits and the accompanying jewelry collection. The study of the topic was conducted through the personal design process. Researching the theoretical data and historical background of the phenomenon lead to a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Two practice-based approaches were applied and documented. Their outcomes are the archive of the anamorphic patterns, the archive of the photographs produced during photo sessions of draping with the experimental prototypes on a live model and a dress form and the archive of the anamorphic images of the classic pieces of clothing. The thesis describes and provides guidelines and tools for anamorphic distortions, presents the creative process and offers an interpretation of data in the form of the produced fashion collection. The results of the study show that anamorphosis can be utilized as a feasible distortion procedure in fashion design practice. There is a number of approaches to its integration into the design process and pieces of clothing. Depending on one’s style of work one can adapt the tools and utilize them in accordance with their needs. Anamorphosis is particularly applicable for practitioners interested in experimental design and production of highly deformed, voluminous and often asymmetrical items.
