Abstract
Most of the moisture problems in concrete floors can be prevented by drying the concrete slab adequately before floor covering installation. Adequate drying is usually evaluated by moisture measurement. The economical effect of the measurement in building project can be significant. Incorrectly measuring or misinterpretation of the measuring results can lead to delay of schedule of the installation work and in that way can cause additional costs. On the other hand, the incorrect moisture measurement can also lead to too early installation with consequences being very expensive due to moisture damage. The aim of the study is to identify factors that have an effect on the process of evaluating adequate drying of a concrete floor, and what the influences of those factors are. Research questions are solved by using a descriptive research method. The goal is to describe and understand the evaluation process of the adequate drying of a concrete floor. The most important novelty value of the study is an identification of factors of uncertainty in relation to the evaluation process of the adequate drying of a concrete floor, and verification of how they effect on the required drying time. The study concluded that the concerned process includes uncontrolled divergences. The factors cause the divergences are critical moisture values as well as moisture measurement methods. There are variations between the critical moisture values of the same floor covering material depending on source of information. There was not any scientific argument found for those critical moisture values either and moisture flow properties of the materials are not taken into consideration. Nevertheless, those values have a considerable effect on the required drying time of a concrete floor. Furthermore the required drying time can vary depending on the existing moisture measure method. There are also many factors of uncertainty which accede to the moisture measurement, which have an influence on measuring results and conclusions and which aren't taken into consideration in measurement handbooks. On the other hand, in the most cases it is almost impossible to estimate the real amount and direction of all those factors of uncertainty. On account of the study, a clear need for further research and development work can be recognized. There is a demand for software, which could calculate on a case-by-case basis the design moisture value and give directives to achieve the desired situation.Description
