Abstract

The energy needs of societies are expanding, and they can be met in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner by using renewable energy. Green hydrogen is one interesting element in renewable energy. From the perspective of a construction company, these renewable energy investments will result in new projects for years to come. As some of these indutries are still relatively new, there is a shortage of information and experience on the procedures involved in executing them. Construction companies would need to understand what capabilities and actions they would need to develop in order to secure these future projects if they wanted to gain a competitive advantage in these emerging industries. This thesis researches what capabilities construction companies need to swiftly enter the hydrogen construction industry and what concrete actions they can take based on the capabilities to gain a competitive advantage. This research conducts a literature review of existing capabilities in the construction industry and qualitative research, in the form of in-depth interviews to understand the hydrogen industry capabilities in more detail. The qualitative research focuses on the hydrogen construction industry because of its great potential and novelty value. This research found out that there are five different capabilities that construction companies should possess in the hydrogen industry. Construction companies should 1) have their basic construction in order, 2) be an active and valued partner, 3) have knowledge in hydrogen and industrial construction, 4) be proactive and responsive, and 5) open to engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) project delivery method. To achieve these capabilities, it was found that there are four different actions that construction companies can take. Construction companies can 1) create a department with specialized hydrogen expertise, 2) develop the appropriate mindset for hydrogen construction, 3) develop the hydrogen industry with industry organizations, and 4) offer EPC project delivery method to customers to be able to gain capabilities for succeeding in the hydrogen industry. It was also acknowledged that the construction of hydrogen plants and industrial process plants are comparable, thus these capabilities and actions can be applied there as well.

Samhällets växande energibehov kan tillgodoses på ett miljövänligt och hållbart sätt genom användning av förnybar energi. Grön vätgas är en intressant del av den förnybara energin. Ur ett byggföretags perspektiv kommer investeringar inom förnybar energi att leda till nya projekt under kommande år. Även om vissa av dessa industrier inom förnybar energi fortfarande är relativt nya, råder det brist på information och erfarenhet om de förfaranden som krävs för att genomföra dessa projekt. Byggföretag skulle behöva förstå vilka förmågor och åtgärder de behöver utveckla för att säkra dessa framtida projekt om de vill skaffa sig en konkurrensfördel inom dessa nya industrier inom förnybar energi. Denna avhandling undersöker vilka förmågor byggföretag behöver för att snabbt komma in i vätgasindustrin och vilka konkreta åtgärder de kan vidta utifrån förmågorna för att få en konkurrensfördel. Denna forskning genomför en litteraturgenomgång av igenkända förmågor inom byggbranschen och en kvalitativ forskning, i form av djupintervjuer för att förstå vilka förmågor som krävs i vätgasindustrin. Den empiriska undersökningen riktade sig in på vätgasindustrin på grund av dess betydande potential och nyhetsvärde. Denna forskning visade att det finns fem olika förmågor som byggföretag bör ha inom vätgasindustrin. Byggföretag ska ha 1) sina grundläggande byggkunskaper i ordning, 2) vara en aktiv och uppskattad partner, 3) ha kunskap inom vätgas och industriell konstruktion, 4) vara proaktiva och lyhörda och 5) öppna för allt i ett projektleveranssätt (EPC). För att uppnå dessa förmågor visades det att det finns fyra olika åtgärder som byggföretag kan vidta. Byggföretag kan 1) skapa en avdelning med specialiserad vätgasexpertise, 2) utveckla ett lämpligt tankesätt för vätgaskonstruktion, 3) utveckla vätgasindustrin med likvärdiga organisationer och 4) erbjuda EPC projektleverans till kunder för att kunna få förmågor att lyckas i vätgasindustrin. Det konstaterades också att byggandet av väteanläggningar och industriella processer är jämförbara, så diplomarbetets igenkända förmågor och åtgärder kan tillämpas även vid byggandet av industriella processer.
