Abstract

Objectives The main objectives of this study are to discover the leadership characteristics of current, salient leaders in Albania and to then compare and contrast them with the perception and values, which the young generation in the country has with respect to leadership. The possibility of a change in the leadership style in the country is investigated too. Summary Two well-known politicians, who have held or are holding important offices in Albania, were interviewed. A survey aimed at students in tertiary education was created. The students were asked both closed and open-ended questions, which are similar to the interviews. The questions for both were created by the author based on the information and themes gleaned in the literature review. All data were analysed qualitatively, whilst the survey was studied quantitatively too. Conclusions There are certain general leadership functions, typical features of leaders, and leading styles that are seen in the same way by actual Albanian leaders. Here, vision and post-heroic leadership can be highlighted. There are also divisive aspects, including other theories and styles, such as coaching or transformational leadership, and 21st-century propositions on how to lead. A notable difference discovered between the two leaders is in their ability to differentiate leadership from management. As for the comparison between leaders and youngsters, some ideas are mutually shared. Among those, a set of acceptance of some more modern styles, such as visionary leadership, and disapproval of masculine approaches can be mentioned. Other, more conservative styles and concepts, including coercive leadership, are either differently thought of or constituted a grey area. Finally, there seems to be considerable potential for a change in the most frequently adopted leadership style in Albania. The reason is the problematic masculine and authoritarian methods used thus far, as well as the insufficient use of crucial elements that are regarded as good leadership today.
