Abstract

The thesis explores and re-evaluates the concept of the ‘Third Place’ as a setting for one’s social life. With a qualitative research approach, this thesis has gathered and analysed data from 11 interviews with participants aged between 24 to 34 of diverse backgrounds living in the Capital region of Finland. The thesis finds that the traditional conceptualisation of the third place remains relevant to a certain extent. At the heart of it, the traditional third place can still pose as one of the meaningful and valuable means of socialising for people today. However, the concept could benefit from having a broadened viewpoint, given the dynamic, evolving and multi-dimensional nature that the participants of this thesis ascribed to it. The findings have also inspired a new perspective to investigate the third place, which is person-centred rather than place-centred and based on the values it offers to people, rather than specific characteristics it may or may not possess.
