Abstract

Synesthesia is a neurological phenomenon in which the stimulation of one sense leads to a response in another, unrelated, sense. This thesis details attempts to convey synesthesia to non-synesthetes using a color-to-sound conversion device. By inducing artificial synesthesia, it is possible for non-synesthetes to enjoy synesthetic art. The following user study was conducted on 20 exhibition attendees, primarily of adult age, from the Craft Museum of Finland. Test results indicated that the addition of a color-to-sound device provided a novel experience which encouraged them to examine the artifacts.
