Abstract
This thesis explores how supermarket design could be more inclusive to better serve the demands of China's older population. With the aging of the Chinese population, adapting supermarkets to become more accessible and accommodating for older adults is crucial. The two primary research questions are: What are the challenges to inclusivity currently affecting older shoppers in Chinese supermarkets, and how can these supermarkets improve their inclusivity? The theoretical framework of this study is based on the "Levels of Inclusive Design," which divides inclusivity into three levels, ranging from basic access to the highest level of empowered success. This method helps in structuring the investigation into how supermarkets can adapt to improve inclusivity and satisfy older consumers. To gather data, the study employs two research methods: service safari and semi-structured interviews. The service safari method tracks the entire shopping journey of older shoppers using a first-person perspective to capture real-time experiences. Semi-structured interviews are then conducted to delve deeper into the identified challenges and understand the elderly's interactions and experiences within these settings. After the research, the inclusivity challenges for the elderly in supermarkets are found based on the 3 levels of inclusive design. Based on the findings, the thesis provides recommendations for creating a more inclusive and sustainable supermarket environment that supports the autonomy and well-being of older shoppers. These suggestions are aimed at all three levels of inclusivity, ensuring that improvements not only make supermarkets accessible but also enhance the overall shopping experience, fostering greater empowerment and success for elderly patrons.Description
