Abstract

Aspirations towards the fourth generation of district heating (4GDH) smart energy systems rely heavily on lower operating temperatures. Due to the investment-heavy nature of the application and the limitations of the existing infrastructure, the transition is expected to be implemented gradually. Reduced operating temperatures offer numerous advantages, most notably reduced distribution heat losses. As the annual heat sales are expected to trend downwards in the upcoming years, the importance of minimization of the operational expenditures is highlighted. Distribution heat losses typically account for a relatively large share of the supplied heat, typically ranging between 8-15% for Western and Northern European DH systems [1]. Therefore, notable cost savings may be accumulated over time through distribution heat loss reductions. As the standard practice to accommodate the gradual shift in operating temperatures is yet to be defined, the current intermediate period is characterized by various alternative approaches to supply temperature reduction. Commissioner of the thesis, Oy Grundfos Pumput Ab, has recently launched a new product family enabling the creation of low temperature zones within the existing DH grid. In the low temperature zones the supply temperature is reduced by mixing cooler return water into the supply line of the zone. Whereas these iGRID temperature zones are equipped to operate as standalone autonomous units, further optimization advantages derive from synergies with various measurement points. iGRID temperature zones innovated by Grundfos are turnkey solutions complemented by a high degree of customization. iGRID temperature zones have already been successfully implemented in Denmark, but currently no pilot studies have been performed in Finland. Based on the findings of the case study conducted in collaboration with Etelä-Savon Energia (ESE), notable heat loss reduction potential persists. Under the conservative approach, it was estimated that a 10 °C reduction in the monthly average supply temperature achieved through the employment of the commissioner solution would reduce the distribution heat losses by approximately 8.5% for the examined seven months.

Meno- ja paluuveden lämpötilatasojen laskeminen kaukolämpöverkossa on identifioitu yhdeksi neljännen sukupolven kaukolämmön perusedellytyksistä. Lisäksi lämmön kokonaismyynnin odotetaan kääntyvän laskuun seuraavien vuosien aikana, jolloin operointikustannusten minimoinnin merkitys korostuu potentiaalisena keinona säilyttää kaukolämmön nykyinen johtava kilpailuasema suomalaisilla lämpömarkkinoilla. Lämpöhäviöit kuluttavat keskimäärin noin 8-15% verkkoon syötetystä lämmöstä pohjoisen ja läntisen Euroopan kaukolämpöverkoissa [1]. Lämpöhäviöiden osuuden vähentämisellä voi siten tulevaisuudessa olla merkittävä vaikutus kaukolämpösektorin elinvoimaisuuden ja kilpailukyvyn ylläpitämisen kannalta. Johtuen nykyisten asiakaslaitteistojen ja infrastruktuurin rajoitteista, investointien kokoluokasta sekä teknisistä haasteista, siirtymän matalempiin operointilämpötiloihin kaukolämpöverkossa odotetaan tapahtuvan asteittain. Diplomityön yhteistyötaho Oy Grundfos Pumput Ab on vastikään lanseerannut Suomessa uuden kaukolämpömarkkinoille suunnatun tuoteperheen. Lanseeratun ratkaisun avulla olemassa oleviin kaukolämpöverkkoihin voidaan luoda matalien lämpötilatasojen vyöhykkeitä, joissa menoveden lämpötilaa voidaan laskea vastaamaan alueen todellista lämmöntarvetta. Menoveden matalampi lämpötila saavutetaan sekoituspiirin avulla, jossa viileämpää paluuvettä sekoitetaan vyöhykkeen syöttölinjaan. Installaatio on toteutettu siten, että se voi toimia myös omana autonomisena yksikkönä, mutta ratkaisun edistyksellisyys perustuu synergiaan erinäisten mittauspisteiden kanssa. Ratkaisua on pilotoitu menestyksekkäästi Tanskassa jo aiemmin, mutta Suomessa ei ole vielä ennen diplomityön julkaisua asennettu ensimmäistä yksikköä kaukolämpöverkkoihin. Tämän diplomityön tulokset kuitenkin indikoivat, että installaatiolla voidaan saavuttaa merkittäviä vähennyksiä kaukolämpöverkon lämpöhäviöissä. Konservatiivisesti laskettu arvio lämpöhäviöiden vähenemiselle oli Rantakylän kaukolämpöverkon haaralle tutkitun seitsemän kuukauden aikana 8,5 %, olettaen että menoveden lämpötilan kuukausikeskiarvoa voidaan laskea 10 °C.
