Comparing access methods in databases

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis was to examine two database access systems in use by a company. The first one is a centralised remote access database system which is used when starting new corporate subsidiaries. The second one is a local direct connections database system which is taken into use when the remote access system is exchanged for it after the growth of subsidiary business. The main focus of this thesis was to define the optimal change point from the remote access system to the local system.

Based on operational experience, the remote access system was known to be slower to use than the local system but the exact impact of this difference was unknown. The benefits and limitations of both database access systems were studied, based on which a series of tests was developed in order to measure the performance difference between the database access systems. These tests were then carried out at subsidiary locations in Tampere and Romania, and at the company headquarters in Helsinki. The results of the tests were analysed and a monetary value for the performance difference between the remote access system and the local system was calculated.

The calculated performance difference cost was compared to investment costs calculations of the different database access systems and based on this comparison the optimal change point from the remote access system to the local system was defined. Finally some suggestions for design alternatives were given that could prolong the use of the remote access system before the local system is needed.

Tämän työn tavoitteena oli tutkia erään yrityksen käytössä olevaa kahta järjestelmää, jotka muodostavat yhteyden tietokantaan. Ensimmäinen on tietokannan keskitetty etäkäyttöjärjestelmä, jota käytetään uusien tytäryhtiöiden käyttöönotoissa. Toinen on paikallinen järjestelmä, jossa yhteys muodostuu suoraan tietokantaan, jota käytetään kun keskitetty järjestelmä vaihdetaan siihen tytäryhtiön toiminnan kasvaessa. Tämän työn tärkein tavoite oli määrittää optimaalinen hetki vaihtaa etäjärjestelmä paikalliseen järjestelmään.

Etäjärjestelmän käyttö tiedettiin paikallisen järjestelmän käyttöä hitaammaksi järjestelmien käyttökokemusten perusteella, mutta hitauden tarkkaa vaikutusta ei tiedetty. Etä- ja paikallisen järjestelmän edut ja haitat tutkittiin, ja niiden perusteella laadittiin sarja testejä. Testien tarkoituksena oli mitata järjestelmien välinen tehokkuusero. Testit suoritettiin tytäryhtiöiden toimipisteissä Tampereella sekä Romaniassa ja tämän lisäksi vielä yrityksen pääkonttorilla Helsingissä. Testien tulokset analysoitiin ja järjestelmien väliselle tehokkuuserolle laskettiin hinta.

Järjestelmien tehokkuuserolle laskettua hintaa verrattiin järjestelmien investoinneille laskettuihin kustannuksiin. Tämän vertailun perusteella määitettiin optimaalinen hetki vaihtaa etäjärjestelmä paikalliseen järjestelmään. Työn lopuksi ehdotettiin vaihtoehtoja, joiden avulla etäjärjestelmän vaihtoa paikalliseen järjestelmään voisi mahdollisesti lykätä.
