Abstract

Tampereen taidemuseo on Suomen kolmanneksi vanhin taidemuseo. Toiminta aloitettiin nykyisessä museorakennuksessa vuonna 1931. Vuodesta 1974 museo on toiminut Pirkanmaan aluetaidemuseona. Museon perustaja oli Tampereen taideyhdistys, mutta Tampereen kaupunki on hallinnoinut toimintaa vuodesta 1985 saakka. Museorakennus on entinen kruunun viljamakasiini vuodelta 1838. Rakennuksen alkuperäiset suunnitelmat on tehty Yleisten rakennusten intendentinkonttorin tuolloisen intendentin C. L. Engelin johdolla. Museon toiminta on ollut hajautettuna eri toimipisteisiin. Samalla museolla ei ole tiloja pitää esillä suuria kokoelmiaan. Nykyinen museorakennus ei vastaa nykyisiä tilallisia vaatimuksia. Tampereen kaupunki järjesti suunnittelukilpailun Tampereen taidemuseon laajennuksesta ja ympäröivän alueen suunnittelusta joulukuusta 2016 maaliskuuhun 2017. Tampereen museotoimen tavoitteena on lisätä museon vetovoimaa ja tunnettuutta arkkitehtuurin ja taidekokoelmiensa kautta. Museon tavoitteena on myös keskittää toimintansa ja henkilöstönsä saman katon alle. Hanke pohjautuu Tampereen kaupunki-strategian 2025 toimenpiteisiin vuosina 2014-2017. Tässä diplomityössä on esitetty suunnitelma museon tarpeisiin vastaavasta uudisrakennuksesta, joka liittyy fyysisesti ja toiminnallisesti vanhaan museorakennukseen. Osallistuin kilpailuun itsenäisesti, ja tässä diplomityössä kilpailuehdotusta on kehitetty ja muutettu. Lopullinen suunnitelma ei perustu juurikaan kilpailutyöhön, vaan on täysin jatkosuunnittelun tulos. Suunnitelmassa on otettu huomioon kilpailun ar-vostelupöytäkirjassa esitettyjä hyviksi nähtyjä ratkaisuja ja suunnitteluperiaatteita.

Tampere Art Museum is the third oldest art museum in Finland. Museum-activity in the current museum building started in 1931. Since 1974, Tampere Art Museum has served as the art museum of the Pirkanmaa region. Museum was originally founded by the art association of Tampere but the activities has been administered by the City of Tampere since the 1985. The museum building itself was build in 1838 and it originally served as an government grain warehouse. Original designs were made by the intendant office of the public buildings under the management of intendant C. L. Engel. Museum activity has been decentralized into different outlets and the museum don’t have the capacity to maintain large art collections. Current main museum building doesn’t match with the present day space requirements. The City of Tampere arranged the architectural competition for the design of the museum expansion and the surrounding areas. Competition was held from December 2016 to March 2017. The current management of the museum wishes to increase the attraction and recognizability of the museum with its architecture and art collections. It also wishes to centralize its activities and personnel under the single roof. The project is based on the city strategy of the 2014-2017 of the city of Tampere. This master’s thesis presents the designs of the new building that fits the needs of the museum and is connected to the old museum building both physically and functionally. I participated in the architectural competition independently and in this thesis the original competition submission has been altered and improved. Rather than being based on the original design submitted to the competition, the designs presented in this thesis are completely a result of the new planning. New designs take into account some good solutions and design principles presented in the grading record of the architectural competition.
