Abstract

Objectives The main objectives of this study were to explore the many advantages and disadvantages of a Universal Basic Income scheme. The study also sets out to explore the possible connection between a UBI and the climate crisis, specifically assessing whether or not a UBI could act as a complementary policy to the EU’s circular economy proposal. A series of interviews with expert researchers were conducted in order to collect qualitative data for the meaningful discussion of a UBI’s possible environmental implications. Summary The study finds a multitude of promising potential effects associated with a UBI based social security system. For instance, a UBI can be seen as a simple yet efficient strategy to poverty alleviation, improving income equality, as well as contributing to mental health at large. Furthermore, a UBI shows promising potential as a flexible system of social security well suited to tackle prominent issues such as the increase of part-time employment, aging demographics, and automation. However, current UBI proposals still have an abundance of issues needing clarification such as financing and political feasibility. In regard to its environmental implications, a UBI could compliment a circular economy by promoting a shift in priorities associated with labor and consumption. Furthermore, a UBI shows promising potential in its ability to improve conditions for entrepreneurship and innovation, which can be seen as a vital facet of tackling the climate crisis. Conclusions The idea of a UBI shows promising potential in its ability to further multiple causes of social justice and equality. If executed correctly, a UBI can in many ways also be coupled with the pursuit of a circular economy. Further empirical research on the many environmental implications of a UBI must be conducted in order to reach definitive conclusions.
