Abstract
Tämä kuvataidekasvatuksen taiteen maisterin opinnäytetyö keskittyi tarkastelemaan itse tehdyn keraamisen tuhkauurnan tekoprosessia kokemuksena Keraaminen tuhkauurna -kurssin aikana ja itse uurnaan liittyviä laajempia merkityksenantoja. Tutkimuskysymyksinä olivat: Mitä ajatuksia, tunteita ja merkityksiä nousee esiin itse tehdyn tuhkauurnan tekoprosessin aikana kyselyn vastauksista ja kurssin aikana tehdyistä havainnoista? Miten tekijöiden antamat merkitykset tuovat esiin kulttuurissamme vallitsevia suhtautumistapoja kuolemaan? Entä miten niitä pyritään purkamaan? Lisäksi etsittiin syitä osallistua Keraaminen tuhkauurna -kurssille, sitä mitä itse tehdyssä tuhkauurnassa haluttiin korostaa, sekä miten kurssin terapeuttisuus ilmeni. Kurssin osallistujien kokemuksia peilattiin myös opinnäytetyön tekijän omiin kokemuksiin, jotka ovat omalta osaltaan olleet vaikuttamassa tutkimukseen ja sen tuloksiin. Opinnäytetyö liittyy osaltaan taidekasvatuksen tutkimukseen, jonka tavoitteena on taidekasvatuskäytäntöjen kehittäminen. Aihetta tutkittiin Keraaminen tuhkauurna -kurssin aikana keväällä 2023 tehtyjen havaintojen ja kurssilaisille teetetyn kyselyn avulla. Tutkimuksessa on tapaustutkimuksen piirteitä ja hermeneuttinen tutkimusote. Aineiston analyysimenetelmänä on teemoittelu ja hermeneuttinen tutkimusote aineiston lukutavassa. Opinnäytetyön tuloksista käy ilmi, että Keraaminen tuhkauurna -kurssin menetelmä korostaa sanatonta ja kehollista kuoleman teeman käsittelyä. Saven käsittely ja työstäminen on konkreettista ja antaa vapauden olla teeman äärellä kuten itse toivoo. Käsin tekeminen ja savi materiaalina tuovat mukanaan myös terapeuttisia elementtejä. Kurssin aikana koetut ajatukset ja tunteet olivat pääosin positiivisia ja niissä korostuu merkityksellisyyden kokemus. Kurssilla tehtiin myös totutusta poikkeavia tuhkauurnia, joita on tarkoitus katsella arjessa ikään kuin Memento mori (“muista kuolevaisuutesi”) -esineinä. Keraaminen tuhkauurna -kurssilla ollaan yhteisesti läsnä kuoleman teeman kanssa ja tämä tietyllä tapaa rikkoo kulttuurissamme vallitsevaa yksityisyyttä kuolemaan liittyen. Itse tehty tuhkauurna haastaa myös kuoleman teemaan liittyvää hallitsemattomuuden kokemusta tarjoamalla mahdollisuuden vaikuttaa tuhkauurnan muotoon ja koristeluihin. Tuhkauurnissa haluttiin korostaa persoonallisuutta ja vaikuttamaan pääseminen koettiin merkitykselliseksi. Persoonallisten tuhkauurnien koettiin rikkovan perinteitä ja tämä sai kurssilaiset pohtimaan läheisten reaktioita. Tuloksissa nousee esiin tarve ja halu päästä käsittelemään kuoleman teemaa. Kurssin voi katsoa olevan aktiivista kuolemaan tutustumista, joka taas voi haihduttaa kuoleman käsittämättömyyttä. Kurssin menetelmä on täten myös vapauttava ja voimaannuttava. Menetelmä mahdollistaa totutusta poikkeavan tavan käsitellä kuoleman teemaa.This master’s thesis in art education focused on examining the process of making a self-made ceramic burial urn as an experience during the Ceramic burial urn course and the broader meanings related to the burial urn itself. The research questions were: What thoughts, feelings and meanings emerge during the process of making a self-made burial urn from the answers to the survey and the observations made during the course? How do the meanings given by the course participants bring out the prevailing attitudes towards death in our culture? And how do they try to deconstruct them? In addition, this thesis looked for reasons to participate in the Ceramic burial urn course, what participants wanted to emphasize in the self-made burial urn, and how the therapeutic nature of the course manifested itself. The experiences of the course participants were also mirrored in the thesis writer’s own experiences, which have influenced the research and its results. The thesis is related to art education research, the goal of which is the development of art education practices. The topic was examined during the Ceramic burial urn course in the spring of 2023 with the help of observations and a survey given to the course participants. The research has features of a case study and a hermeneutic research approach. The analysis method of the material is thematization and a hermeneutic research extract in the way of reading the material. The results of the thesis show that the method of the Ceramic burial urn course emphasizes the non-verbal and physical handling of the theme of death. Handling and working with clay is concrete and gives you the freedom to be with the theme as you wish. Handcrafting and clay as a material also bring therapeutic elements. The thoughts and feelings experienced during the course were mostly positive and emphasize the experience of meaning. Also unusual burial urns, which are intended to be viewed in everyday life as if they were Memento Mori (remember you must die) objects, were made in the course. In the ceramic burial urn course, course participants are jointly present with the theme of death, and this in a certain way violates the privacy prevailing in our culture regarding death. A self-made burial urn also challenges the experience of being out of control related to the theme of death by offering the opportunity to influence the shape and decorations of the burial urn. Course participants wanted to emphasize personality in the burial urns and being able to influence was felt to be meaningful. Some of the burial urns were felt to break tradition and this made the course participants think about the reactions of their close ones. The results show the need and desire to deal with the theme of death. The course can be considered an active way of getting to know death, which in turn can dissipate the incomprehensibility of death. The liberating and empowering side of the course comes to the fore here. The method enables a different way of dealing with the theme of death.Description
