Abstract
The goal of a present research based project has been defined as developing a customized interior design concept for Mesta Coworking, a new type of low cost small scale co-working spaces outside city centre. This type of spaces aims at increasing social and working activities within suburban areas and facilitating community cohesion and social equity. Project goal, structure and aspirations have determined the objectives of the study, that comprised: detailed formulation of all components influencing co-working space design; representation of all research, ideation and design steps; and, finally, articulation of practical implementations and introduction of a customised interior design framework. The study was executed as a commission project consisting of three phases – theoretical, applied research phase and thesis compilation stage. The practical part was performed within fourteen weeks in August - mid November 2018 with close cooperation with Mesta Co-working owners and coworking space visitors. The research was implemented by employing theory and methodology from interior architecture, market research and service design. Primary research methodology was based on the framework developed by Sanders, Brandt and Binder, and was employed as a guideline for choosing the most suitable tool or technique for information gathering in specific situations. Theoretical framework has combined overall project development steps and interior design phases. The toolkit provided by Project for Public Spaces was utilized as the major assessment instrument during all the project steps. The framework for Mesta project has comprised placemaking and social sustainability theories developed by Project for Public Spaces, Grabow, Wykoff and Dempsey et al. Space syntax theory developed by Hillier and his colleagues was used as a major instrument for analyzing and designing optimum coworking layout. As a practical outcome the project aimed at developing a specific Mesta’s interior design framework, that may assist in developing spatial solutions when expanding coworking business further on. Generally this framework may be applied as a guideline that enables community-oriented companies independently develop quality interior design solutions without excessive outsourcing.Description
