Item management in engineer-to-order business

Abstract

This thesis looks into the development of an item management concept in an engineer-to-order business. First step is to study how the business operates and from there to deduce a working concept. The company under study is Outotec, a Finnish technology group that delivers sustainable metals refinement, energy and water purification solutions. Outotec is transforming from a project company into industrial service company.

Purpose of this thesis is to look from the company’s point-of-view what issues need to be considered when developing item management in this environment. While reviewing the challenges, we will look into research made in this field. At the same time the special nature of project oriented operations is taken into account.

Business processes of the case company are reviewed as an input for the concept. Main output of the thesis is the proposal for item management concept for Outotec. This includes definitions, data model, and the managing organization. In the data model we examine the contents of the item model, including life-cycle, typing, classification and how these are planned to be used in the target company.

Finally, the conclusions are made. These discoveries help to understand the critical points of building and deploying an item management concept.

Tässä työssä tutkitaan miten luoda toimiva nimikehallinnan konsepti engineer-to-order liiketoiminnassa. Aluksi selvitetään, miten yrityksen prosessit toimivat ja miten johtaa tarpeista toimiva konsepti. Tutkittava yhtiö on Outotec, teknologiakonserni, joka tarjoaa kestäviä metallinjalostus-, energia- ja vedenpuhdistusratkaisuja. Outotec on muuttumassa projekteja toimittavasta yrityksestä teolliseksi palveluyritykseksi.

Työn tarkoituksena on tarkastella yhtiön näkökulmasta mitä asioita on otettava huomioon kehitettäessä nimikehallinta tässä ympäristössä. Samalla käydään läpi kirjallisuutta tältä alueelta. Työssä korostuu projektiliiketoiminnan erityisluonne.

Liiketoiminnan prosessien analysointi on lähtökohtana konseptin rakentamiselle. Tämän työn tärkein tuotos onkin nimikehallinnan konseptin tuottaminen Outotecille. Tämä sisältää määritelmät, tietomallin, ja organisaatiomallin. Tietomallissa tarkastellaan nimikemalli, elinkaari, tyypitys, luokitus ja miten nämä ovat suunniteltu käytettäviksi kohdeyrityksessä.

Lopuksi työssä käydään läpi päätelmät ja suositukset. Nämä auttavat ymmärtämään keskeisiä kipupisteitä nimikkeiden hallinnassa.
