Abstract
Childbirth is a significant event that affects the lives of many women. The childbirth experience has various consequences for the mother but also for the child. Childbirth experiences have only been studied in the past couple of years and thorough research of the consequences of childbirth experiences is yet to be studied. In my thesis, I studied how the childbirth experience can be managed in order to create positive delivery experiences. I explored the factors that are related to positive childbirth experiences and the impact that both positive and negative childbirth experiences have on the mother as well as the job satisfaction of the employees working in the hospital. The aim of this study was to combine the efforts of previous research in order to best provide suggestions for hospitals to improve their management of childbirths. The key findings indicated that there are various factors which play a role in ensuring positive childbirth experiences. Such factors include confidence, caregiver continuity and support from healthcare professionals and partners. The consequences of both positive and negative childbirth experiences can be far-reaching. Those, who have had a positive childbirth experience tend to have more children with smaller age gaps whereas the opposite persists for those with negative experiences. The consequences of negative childbirth experience extend beyond the scope of number of children and can be dire. Women with negative childbirth experiences suffer from a higher rate of mental health disorders, especially post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Additionally, these mothers may have more challenges in creating a good bond with their children, which can lead to issues with child development. Childbirth experiences can be enhanced through making the delivery environment safe clinically and psychologically and by providing extensive support. Support can be pharmacological through pain management, or it can be non-pharmacological. Emotional support is an essential factor in providing positive delivery experiences and it can be provided through presence of the healthcare professionals, ensuring that the woman has control over her delivery and empowering the woman during delivery. In conclusion, it can be deduced that there are various and significant ways in which childbirth can be managed by healthcare personnel. Thus, it is essential for organizations to have a clear understanding of how childbirth can be best managed within their cultural scope. It is crucial for hospitals to have delivery management strategies which support the needs of the woman and her potential delivery companion. Additionally, it is important that pain is managed without delay and with methods that the woman has consented to.Description
