An investigation of thermal response of groundwater-filled borehole heat exchanger through a laboratory model

Abstract

In Nordic countries such as Sweden, Norway, and Finland, it is very common to build borehole heat exchangers by installing U-tube in a groundwater-filled borehole. Due to the hydrology and geology in such countries, groundwater naturally fills the borehole. The calculations and design of water-filled borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) are more complicated than the case for grouted one. As the thermal resistance of the water-filled borehole is changing due to several parameters such as water temperature and consequently water density. The main objective of this master’s thesis was to investigate the thermal response of water-filled BHEs. In addition, some freezing around the heat exchanging fluid could happen. A series of thermal response tests (TRT) with five temperature setpoints of 10, 8, 6, 4 and 1 °C was performed in the HVAC Laboratory of Aalto University, Espoo, Finland. A small-scale borehole heat exchanger model with a height of 6 meters and a diameter of 11.5 cm was used. For each temperature setpoint, calculation of different BHE’s parameters was done, such as thermal resistance and heat transfer coefficient. The TRTs and calculations helped to see how the system responds. As the temperature setpoint decreased, the heat transfer rate and water heat transfer coefficient increased. The maximum water thermal resistance happened at a temperature of 5.8 °C. Additionally, water freezing around the fluid pipe legs was tested with three fluid temperature setpoints of -3, -4 and -5 °C. The lower the temperature setpoint, the faster the freezing happened. In general, the aim of the thesis was successfully done. However, some of the results were out of the supposed range. The reason for that was due to some sources of errors in the setup. With some further modifications and enhancements on the system, it could give more accurate results.

Pohjoismaissa, kuten Ruotsissa, Norjassa ja Suomessa, on erittäin yleistä rakentaa reikälämmönvaihtimia asentamalla U-putki pohjaveden täytettyyn reikään. Tällaisissa maissa tapahtuvan hydrologian ja geologian vuoksi pohjavesi täyttää porareiän luonnollisesti. Vesitäytettyjen reikälämmönvaihtimien (BHE) laskelmat ja suunnittelu ovat monimutkaisempia kuin laastitun. Koska vedellä täytetyn reiän lämpöresistanssi muuttuu useiden parametrien, kuten veden lämpötilan ja siitä seuraavan veden tiheyden, vuoksi. Tämän diplomityön päätavoitteena oli tutkia vesitäytteisten BHE: ien lämpövastetta. Lisäksi lämmönvaihtonesteen ympärillä voi tapahtua jonkin verran jäätymistä. Espoon Aalto-yliopiston LVI-laboratoriossa tehtiin sarja lämpövastetestejä (TRT) viidellä lämpötilan asetuspisteellä 10, 8, 6, 4 ja 1 ° C.
