Abstract

During the spring semester of 2025, nine architecture students from Aalto University took part in the Interplay of Culture Studio, focusing on urban transformation in Kumasi along the Manhyia Corridor—an important urban axis connecting the Airport Roundabout to the Manhyia Palace. The three-week fieldwork in Kumasi was organised in collaboration with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and supported by Manhyia Palace. Through interviews, data collection, and site analysis, the students explored opportunities to enhance public space, green infrastructure, and community well-being and engagement. Working in collaboration with local students and professors, and guided by Professors and teachers Saija Hollmén, Taru Niskanen, and Meeri Pitkänen, the team proposed interventions aimed at improving walkability, increasing shade, and restoring ecological connections. The proposals include pocket parks, intergenerational spaces, tree-planting strategies, and public infrastructure—designed to strengthen the relationship between people, nature, and the urban environment. The project aims to serve as an umbrella strategy that could inspire similar interventions along other corridors in the future for the city of Kumasi. This publication presents the research, process, and proposals developed during the spring semester studio—demonstrating how architecture can engage with complex urban realities through collaboration and care.
