The aim of this thesis is to investigate and identify the history and present status of Amigurumi (Crocheted or knitted stuffed toys) and to define a concise historical frame of the origins and evolution of it as a contemporary craft in Japan. In the first part, results of the research and interviews regarding the origins of Amigurumi in Japan starting around 1950 are presented. These information suggest that Western influences and culture played an important role in the origins of Amigurumi in Japan but that Animism and Japan’s spiritual beliefs might have had a strong influence. The thesis then identifies Amigurumi as a form of play. It presents the elements of an Amigurumi toy and proposes an aesthetic rule of thumb regarding the design and aesthetics of Amigurumis. Additionally the author suggests two different categories to differentiate Amigurumi toys. To conclude the thesis presents the artist's take on Amigurumi design and makes an analysis on future scenarios for the design and future of Amigurumi communities regarding free culture and media.en
