Abstract
Sidoksia Ajassa – Inspiraatiota Perinnetekstiileistä ja Tekniikoista on maisterin opinnäytetyö, joka tutkii millaista inspiraatiota voi löytää raanuista sekä niiden valmistuksesta. Opinnäytteesä inspiraatiota haetaan myös tekstiilitaiteilija Elsa Montell-Saanion töistä, jonka taiteellisesta tuotannosta suuri osa on raanuja. Työssä tutkitaan myös kysymystä siitä, miten käsityönä tehdyn taidetekstiilin olemuksen pystyisi säilyttämään teollisesti valmistettuna.
Aihe syntyi henkilökohtaisesta kiinnostuksesta tätä perinteistä kudontatekniikkaa kohtaan, sekä halusta yrittää luoda jotakin samankaltaista nykypäivän teknologian avulla. Myöskin mielenkiinto tekstiilitaiteeseen ja halu hyödyntää omaa osaamista kudottujen tekniikoiden parissa, samalla kuitenkin oppien jotakin uutta, ohjasi minua aiheen valinnassa.
Opinnäyte koostuu kirjallisesta ja produktiivisesta osasta. Kirjallisessa osiossa käsitellään lyhyesti kudonnan ja raanujen historiaa sekä valmistusmenetelmiä Suomessa, ja esitellään työtä inspiroiva taiteilija. Siinä kerrotaan myös työssä käytettävistä metodeista, eli käytäntöjohteisesta tutkimusmenetelmästä, ja sen tutkimuskeinoja tukevasta autoetnografisesta tutkimusmenetelmästä.
Taiteellisessa produktiossa edetään käytäntöjohteisen menetelmän keinoin samanaikaisesti oppien sekä luoden jotakin uutta. Prosessin aikana luonnostellaan ideoita niin paperille, kuin käsin kutomalla loimelle. Näistä tehtyjen havaintojen pohjalta suunniteltiin uusia sidoksia jotka säilyttivät raanun käsin kudotun kankaan olemuksen. Koko prosessin ajan pidettiin päiväkirjaa, jonka tarkoituksena oli reflektoida omaa luovaa prosessia ja siihen liittyviä valintoja. Kaiken projektin aikana kerrytettyjen havaintojen ja tiedon, sekä kehiteltyjen sidosten pohjalta valmistettiin hieman yli puolitoistametrinen raanu.
Opinnäytteen aikana käyty prosessi avaa sitä, millaista inspiraatiota kaikkien näiden aiheiden kanssa ahkerointi tarjoaa Jacquard -tekniikan parissa työskentelevälle taiteilijalle, ja millaisia haasteita niiden pohjalta uusien tekniikoiden luominen tuo mukanaan.
Weaves in Time – Inspiration from Traditional Textiles and Techniques is a master’s thesis which researches what kind of inspiration can one find from raanu textiles and their production methods. In this thesis inspiration is also drawn from textile artist Elsa Montell-Saanio’s works, whose artistic production largely consists of raanu’s. This work examines also the the question of how can a handcrafted art textile’s essence be captured in an industrially woven fabric.
The subject came to be from a personal interest towards this traditional woven method, and also from the desire to create something similar with modern technology. Additionally my interest in textile art and the desire to make use of my own competence with woven textiles, whilst learning something new, guided me towards this subject.
This thesis consists of a written part and a production part. The written part explains briefly the history of woven textiles and raanu’s, and their manufacturing methods in Finland, and introduces the artist who inspires this work. It also explains the used research methods, which are practice-led research, and autoethnographical research which supports the research methods used in practice-led research.
The artistic production follows the methods of practicalce-led research, simultaneously learning and creating something new. During the processs I sketch my ideas onto paper, and also directly weaving on the loom. Based on my observations I then create new weaves which preserve the essence of hand woven fabric. During the whole process I kept a diary, the purpose of which was to help me reflect my artistic process and the choices I make related to it. Based on all the observations and knowledge gained during the project, a bit over one and a half meter long raanu was created using the generated new weaves.
This process sheds light on what kind of inspiration can be found when working with these themes for an artist who works with Jacquard -techniques, and what kind of challenges creating new methods brings with them.
