Abstract

This Master's thesis explores the rationales for university-industry R&D cooperation on emerging technologies from both firm and university points of view. It takes a step towards a deeper understanding of how the benefits and negative effects of collaboration are formed. This is done by explaining how systemic nature of innovation strengthens the advantages of cooperation. Systemic innovation is an innovation that requires significant adjustments from the business system it is embedded in and whose value is formed in conjunction with other innovations of the system. The thesis builds on data collected from five case studies of collaborative R&D projects on an emerging field of technology, the Semantic Web. The analysis of cases is conducted both within single-case and cross-case level. The contributions of this study concern the emerging phase of technology. The study extends the university-industry collaboration literature by providing new rationales of universityindustry collaboration in the context of systemic innovation. It proposes two new rationales for collaboration from the firm perspective, technology validation and technology diffusion. They both stem from the characteristics of systemic innovation, and therefore have not been identified in the prior literature, which has not distinguished rationales in systemic innovation context from rationales in other environments. The thesis also contributes to the understanding of rationality of collaboration from the university perspective by pointing out that systemic nature of innovation coupled with advanced industrial research effort increases the advantages of cooperation to the university. The implications of the findings are discussed from managerial, university and technology policy perspective.

Diplomityö tutkii syitä yritysten ja korkeakoulujen väliselle tutkimusyhteistyölle syntymävaiheen teknologioissa yrityksen ja yliopiston näkökulmasta Se syventää yhteistyön etujen ja haittojen ymmärrystä selittämällä, miten innovaation systeemisyys lisää yhteistyöstä saatuja hyötyjä. Innovaation systeemisyydellä tarkoitetaan sitä, että innovaatio edellyttää merkittävää sovittamista systeemiltä, jonka osa se on, ja innovaatiosta saatava hyötyy syntyy yhdessä systeemin muiden innovaatioiden kanssa. Työ rakentuu viidestä yhteistyöprojektin tapaustutkimuksesta. Nämä yhteistyöprojektit tutkivat semanttista verkkoa, joka on syntymässä oleva teknologia-alue. Projekteja analysoidaan työssä sekä yksittäin että vertailevasti. Työn kontribuutiot keskittyvät teknologian syntymisvaiheeseen. Tutkimus laajentaa yritysten ja teollisuuden välistä yhteistyötä koskevaa kirjallisuutta tuomalla esiin uusia perusteluja yhteistyölle systeemisissä innovaatioissa. Työ esittää kaksi uutta perustelua yhteistyölle yrityksen näkökulmasta, teknologian validoinnin ja teknologian diffuusion, jotka molemmat syntyvät innovaation systeemisyydestä. Aikaisempi yhteistyön perusteiden tutkimus, joka ei ole erotellut systeemisiä innovaatioita muista, ei ole näitä perusteluja havainnut. Työ myös kontribuoi yliopiston yhteistyöperusteluiden ymmärtämiseen. Tutkimuksessa huomataan, että innovaation systeemisyys ja yritysten tutkimuksen edistyksellisyys yhdessä kasvattavat yliopiston yhteistyöstä saamia hyötyjä. Löydösten merkitystä tarkastellaan liikkeenjohdon, yliopiston ja teknologiapolitiikan näkökulmasta.
