Abstract

This thesis examines the Kuleshov effect, a concept derived from the field of film editing, and applies it to the practice of film directing through an explo- ration of the construction of a protagonist in a narrative that juxtaposes two distinct worlds. It is a practice-based, qualitative research, best defined as autoethnography. A literature review serves as the theoretical foundation for the case study, establishing a connection between Ortega y Gasset’s (1883- 1955) philosophical concept of “contextualism,” Lajos Egri’s (1888-1967) ideas on writing a three-dimensional character and Lev Kuleshov’s (1899- 1970) montage theory, which is then followed by an in-depth analysis of the author’s own experience with writing and directing the artistic component of the thesis entitled “My Unborn Son”. How to apply the 1+1=3 formula in film directing to tell the story of and portray a protagonist in parallel worlds: in screenwriting, cinematography, lighting, color grading, production de- sign, costume, hair and make-up, sound design, music, acting, and lastly, in editing?
