Abstract
The objective of this study was to provide a list of internet addresses for Wärtsilä to use, as a way of keeping the company up to date on changes in the most important air emission legislations. Another objective was to gather the most important international protocols, directives and other documents affecting the stationary engine industry into one document. The information already gathered by Wärtsilä was studied, and later the standards were checked on official websites. For some countries Wärtsilä's local offices were needed for checking the accuracy of the information found. The study includes both national air emission legislations and international agreements. The countries were chosen according to their importance as market areas for Wärtsilä, or due to their modern, prime mover specific air emission legislations. The most important air pollutants are presented, as well as the three prime movers (steam boilers, gas turbines and stationary engines), from an air pollution perspective. The pollution prevention guidelines provided by the World Bank and air emission limits required by some regional development banks are also presented. The importance of the World Bank guidelines is significant as these air emission limits are used in numerous projects worldwide. The introduction of the Equator Principles has made the World Bank guidelines even more frequently used. The development and future trends of air emission legislations are discussed. After the brief presentation of the countries, the most important and influential legislations are discussed. Initially it was uncertain how many legislations would be located. As the work progressed, quite a few were found, although it became evident, that stationary engines are the least well-known prime mover. The trend is still moving toward prime mover specific legislations, which is important. Prime mover specific legislations are the best way of ensuring fair and equal emission limits for different techniques.Description
