Usability of virtual learning environment from a teacher's perspective

Abstract

In year 2006 Koulutuskeskus Salpaus started a new development project. As a result of the project, a Moodle -based virtual learning environment eLSa (e-Learning Salpaus) was created. This thesis studied the usability of eLSa and tested if the usability goals were achieved.

In the literature study the usability definitions and the usability evaluation methods were presented. In the experimental study a questionnaire for the teachers was made. With the help of the questionnaire it was studied if the usability goals were achieved. The results were analyzed and some conclusions were made to develop the virtual learning environment.

According to the results of the questionnaire, web-based learning was increased among the teachers at Koulutuskeskus Salpaus when eLSa was created. This happened despite of the fact that some of the usability goals were not achieved. The users thought that virtual learning environment eLSa had good learnability and good memorability. Some of the users thought that eLSa was not a modern and not a flexible virtual learning environment. All of the teachers did not use eLSa. Some of them told that the reason for that was that they did not have enough training and support when using eLSa. Also some of the teachers that were using eLSa asked for more training and support.

The results of this thesis will be used to develop eLSa further.

Vuonna 2006 Koulutuskeskus Salpaus käynnisti kehitysprojektin, jonka tuloksena syntyi uusi, Moodle -pohjainen verkko-oppimisympäristö eLSa (e-Learning Salpaus). Tässä diplomityössä selvitettiin, toteutuivatko projektissa uuden verkko-oppimisympäristön käytettävyydelle asetetut tavoitteet.

Tämän diplomityön teoriaosassa perehdyttiin verkko-oppimisympäristöjen käytettävyyden määrittämiseen sekä käytettävyyden arviointimenetelmiin eri näkökulmista. Kokeellisessa osassa tehtiin Koulutuskeskus Salpauksen opettajakunnalle käyttäjäkysely, jolla selvitettiin toteutuivatko uuden verkko-oppimisympäristön käytettävyydelle asetetut tavoitteet. Saadut tulokset analysoitiin ja niistä tehtiin johtopäätöksiä verkko-oppimisympäristön edelleen kehittämiseksi.

Käyttäjäkyselyn tulosten perusteella verkkoavusteinen opetus lisääntyi Koulutuskeskus Salpauksen opettajien keskuudessa eLSaan siirtymisen myötä siitä huolimatta, että kaikki asetetut käytettävyystavoitteet eivät täyttyneet. Verkko-oppimisympäristö eLSa oli käyttäjäkyselyyn vastanneiden mielestä helposti opittava ja muistettava. Osa vastaajista oli kuitenkin sitä mieltä, että eLSa ei ole nykyaikainen eikä joustava verkko-oppimisympäristö. Läheskään kaikki opettajat eivät käytä eLSaa opetuksessaan. Osa heistä ilmoitti syyksi sen, etteivät he ole mielestään saaneet riittävästi koulutusta ja tukea eLSan käyttämiseen. Myös osa eLSaa käyttävistä opettajista toivoi saavansa lisää koulutusta eLSan hyödyntämiseen.
