Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to find an optimal solution to seamless interoperability between SMS and IM messaging domains without interfering with the existing services. This thesis also defines the detailed use cases and evaluation criteria which the solution should satisfy. First, the functionality of the SMS, mobile IP based messaging, and IP interworking is studied from the mobile operator's point of view. Thereafter, various interoperability mechanisms are presented and analyzed in detail. Based on the findings, a need for an alternative solution is recognized. A new approach to interoperability is presented, first as a generic model suitable for any operator network, and then as a specific implementation suggestion for the target network of this thesis. The selected approach is based on the use cases and each step is analyzed in detail. The resulting system is evaluated against the predefined criteria. The results show that interoperability between the messaging domains is complex and requires careful consideration. The problem can be solved in multiple different ways depending on the required functionality. All of the approaches introduce different problems, but a feasible mechanism can be found if the requirements are clear.

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena on selvittää optimaalinen ratkaisu tekstiviestipalvelun ja pikaviestipalvelun saumattomaan yhteensovitukseen. Diplomityössä määritellään ne käyttötapaukset ja arviointikriteerit jotka ratkaisun tulee täyttää. Työn alussa esitellään tekstiviestipalvelu, mobiili IP-pohjainen pikaviestintä ja operaattoreiden välinen IP-verkkojen yhteenliittäminen. Tämän jälkeen erilaiset mahdolliset yhteensovitustavat esitellään ja analysoidaan yksityiskohtaisesti. Tuloksiin pohjautuen tunnistetaan tarve vaihtoehtoiselle ratkaisulle. Uusi yhteensovittamismenetelmä esitellään, ensin jokaiseen operaattoriverkkoon sopivana yleisenä ratkaisumallina ja sen jälkeen erityisenä toteutusehdotuksena diplomityön käsittelemään kohdeverkkoon. Valittu lähestymistapa pohjautuu määriteltyihin käyttötapauksiin ja siihen kuuluvat vaiheet käydään läpi yksityiskohtaisesti. Tuloksena olevaa järjestelmää arvioidaan arviointikriteerien pohjalta. Tulokset osoittavat, että viestintäverkkojen yhteensovitus on monimutkaista ja vaatii huolellista arviointia. Ongelma voidaan ratkaista monilla erilaisilla tavoilla riippuen halutusta toiminnallisuudesta. Jokainen ratkaisuvaihtoehto tuo mukanaan omat ongelmansa, mutta toteuttamiskelpoinen ratkaisu voidaan löytää jos vaatimusmäärittelyt ovat selkeät.
