Abstract

The topic of this thesis is steel portal frame optimization using genetic algorithms (GA). The aim was to create a set of tools for solving the portal frame optimization problem. The real-coded genetic algorithms applied in the optimization were selected from the literature and modified to work with portal frame optimization. A study was performed to find good GA parameters to reduce the time needed for the GA to converge reliably to a reasonable solution. The genetic algorithms selected for this thesis were compared and the best performing algorithm was selected to optimize steel portal frames. The objective was to minimize the mass of the portal frames, which often correlates well with the cost of the structure. Two different typologies of steel portal frames were optimized in the thesis. First typology is hot-rolled standard cross-sections with a haunch at the beam-column connection. The haunch is fabricated of the same cross-section as the rafter beam. Second typology is frames having welded-tapered cross-sections, which have a variable cross-section beam and column profiles that are welded from standard steel plates. The validity of steel portal frame design was checked according relevant design codes in Europe. In this thesis, three design methods were utilized that were developed in the PRECASTEEL project. Two of these methods utilize advanced finite element analysis in the Abaqus environment and one is based on a simple finite element analysis on Microsoft Excel. The Excel method is quick and it is used mainly to analyze behaviour of genetic algorithms. The advanced Abaqus methods are slower and the results obtained with these methods are recommended designs that can be used as a starting point of the final design of a steel portal frame. The optimization tools enable finding a lightweight design, for any portal frame, in a reasonable time. Twelve different test case frames were optimized using the tools. The optimization results show that the genetic algorithm converges often to a global optimum with hot-rolled frames and lightweight welded-tapered frames are found.

Tässä työssä käsitellään teräsportaalikehien optimointia geneettisillä algoritmeilla. Työn tavoitteena oli kehittää työkalut, joiden avulla erilaisia portaalikehiä pystytään optimoimaan. Työssä sovelletut reaalilukukoodatut geneettiset algoritmit valittiin kirjallisuudesta ja ne muokattiin sopiviksi portaalikehien optimointiin. Geneettisiin algoritmeihin liittyvien parametrien vaikutusta konvergointinopeuteen tutkittiin, jotta hyviin optimointituloksiin päästäisiin mahdollisimman lyhyessä ajassa. Työssä käytettyjä geneettisiä algoritmeja vertailtiin keskenään ja parhaiten toimivaa algoritmia käytettiin teräsportaalikehien optimointiin. Optimoinnilla pyrittiin löytämään mahdollisimman keveitä rakenteita, koska rakenteen massa korreloi yleensä hyvin rakenteen kustannusten kanssa. Diplomityössä tutkittiin kahden erilaisen portaalikehätyypin optimointia. Ensimmäinen kehätyyppi on valmistettu kuumavalssatuista standardiprofiileista, jossa pilari-palkkiliitoksia on vahvistettu viisteillä. Viisteet on valmistettu samasta profiilista kuin palkit. Toisen kehätyypin profiilit on hitsattu standarditeräslevyistä ja profiilien korkeutta voidaan muuttaa pituussuunnassa. Hitsatut profiilit tuovat lisää muokattavuutta rakenteeseen. Teräsportaalikehien soveltuvuus tarkastettiin kantavien rakenteiden suunnittelustandardien (pääosin Eurokoodi 3) mukaan. Tässä työssä käytettiin kolmea erilaista suunnittelumenetelmää, jotka kehitettiin PRECASTEEL-tutkimusprojektissa. Näistä menetelmistä kaksi perustuvat edistyneisiin mallinnustekniikoihin elementtimenetelmää käyttäen Abaqus-nimisessä ohjelmistossa. Kolmas menetelmä taas perustuu yksinkertaisempaan elementtimenetelmäsovellukseen taulukkolaskentaohjelmistossa (Microsoft Excel). Excel-menetelmä on nopea ja sitä käytetään pääosin geneettisten algoritmien käyttäytymisen testaamiseen. Edistyneempien menetelmien tuloksia voidaan käyttää pohjana teräskehien lopulliseen suunnitteluun. Optimointityökalut mahdollistavat keveiden teräsportaalikehien suunnittelun lyhyessä ajassa. Kaksitoista esimerkkikehää optimoitiin työkaluja käyttäen. Optimointitulokset osoittavat että geneettinen algoritmi löytää usein globaalin optimiratkaisun standardiprofiilikehissä ja keveisiin rakenteisiin päästään myös hitsattujen profiilien optimoinnissa.
