Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop a synthesis route for (+)-L-tartrate and (+/-)-malate derivatives. These were to function as internal electron donors in the synthesis of novel Ziegler-Natta polypropylene catalysts, developed by Borealis Polymers Oy. In the first part of this work the development of the production of polyolefins, especially polypropylene, with Ziegler-Natta catalysts is presented. The catalyst and the polymerisation chemistry is described, especially the effect of the electron donors. The second part of the work presents the starting materials, (+)-L-tartaric acid, (+)-diethyl-L-tartrate, (+/-)-malic acid and DL-diethyl malate. Also the theory of the reactions mechanisms; esterification, ether synthesis and ring-closing metathesis, are described. Finally, the results of the syntheses are presented with a discussion of the results.
