Naftan unia

Abstract

Maisterin opinnäytetyö koostuu kirjallisesta ja taiteellisesta osasta, joiden molempien nimi on Naftan unia. Taiteellinen osa koostuu ääniteoksesta sekä loopattavasta videoteoksesta, jotka on tarkoitus installoida samaan tilaan.

Opinnäytetyön kirjallisessa osassa käsittelen ristiriitaista kokemustani ajasta, jossa elämme: öljyhuipusta, antroposeenista, teollisten yhteiskuntien kehityskaaren lakipisteestä, josta suunta on kohti perustavanlaatuisia muutoksia. Mikä on paikkani taiteilijana aikana, jolloin törmäykset elämän aineellisiin rajoihin ovat yhä ilmeisempiä ja ihmisyhteisöjen on yhdessä punnittava uudelleen arvot, jotka ovat johtaneet tilanteeseen, jossa ihmistoiminta uhkaa perusteellisesti tuhota olemassaolonsa perusteet? Kudon yhteen antroposeenin, öljyn kokemuksen, materiaalisuuden kokemuksen, valokuvan öljyn lapsena ja unen toisiinsa limittyneinä ja yhteenkietoutuneina asioina, joiden pohjalta opinnäytetyön taiteellinen osa on syntynyt.

The MA-thesis includes a written and an artistic part which both are called Dreams of Naphtha. The artistic part includes a sound piece and a video work (loop) which are meant to be installed in one space.

In the written part of the MA-thesis I'm dealing with the contradicitionary experience I have of the time we're living in: peak oil, Anthropocene, peak of the evolution of industrial revolution, where the direction is leading towards fundamental changes. What is my place as an artist in this period of time when the clashes to the material limits of the life on the planet are obvious, and human societies must re-weight the values which have brought to the situation where human action is about to destroy the foundations of its own existence? I'm weaving together the Anthropocene, experience of oil, experience of materiality, photography as a child of oil, and dream: themes which the artistic part of the MA-thesis has been created around.
