Abstract
Several methods for creating building-related Linked Data graphs exist. This paper focuses on the conversion of Building Information Models in the standardized IFC format (Industry Foundation Classes) to RDF Abox graphs. Although the existing IFC-to-RDF converter is already capable of doing just that, the output data - structured according to the ifcOWL ontology - are rather complex and difficult to implement in software applications. New initiatives hosted by the W3C Linked Building Data (LBD) group focus on the development of multiple modular ontologies to describe building-related data. Besides the central BOT ontology, other flexible modules such as the PRODUCT (building-related products) and PROPS (properties related to building elements) ontologies are now being developed. The IFC-to-LBD converter presented, is necessary to transform IFC building models into RDF Abox graphs structured according these new modular ontologies. The new converter first creates a temporary ifcOWL-based Abox graph, by reusing functionality of the IFC-to-RDF converter. In successive iterative steps, the temporary graph is transformed into one or multiple graphs, structured according to the BOT, PROPS and PRODUCT ontologies. The output is considerably smaller in file size (minimum 80% when all modules are selected) and allows easier query writing compared to the ifcOWL-based graphs made by the existing IFC-to-RDF converter.Description
