Abstract
Objectives The main objectives of this thesis are to explore the extent of gender issues and their possible causes within the game industry, as well as evaluate how the media coverage of the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing´s lawsuit against Activision Blizzard, which is a prime example of what can happen if a toxic work environment is allowed, affected the stock price of the organization. Summary Through researching the state of gender issues within the game industry and finding a possible cause for them, being organizational structure, for which the theories of Kanter (1987), Stamarski and Son Hing (2015), as well as Acker (2016) are used. This is used to determine the root cause allowing for a toxic work culture to exist within Activision Blizzard which then lead to a lawsuit being filed by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing. The effect of the media coverage of said lawsuit on the stock price of Activision Blizzard is then evaluated using the number of monthly news stories of the case which is compared with the monthly stock price of the organization. Conclusions This thesis uncovered that the main reason and source for the toxic work environment existing within Activision Blizzard was due to personal biases and actions. However, the findings regarding the effect of the media coverage of the lawsuit of Activision Blizzard´s stock price turned out somewhat inconclusive but show a hint of a negative correlation between the two variables.Description
