Abstract

In different automation fields there is a dominating trend of convergence towards internet Protocol based networks. The grounds for this are presented in this thesis, as well as the means to implement such a network. The impact two different radio parameters affecting the wireless communication were investigated, and test results showed a clear correlation on the range of the transceiver. Based on this data, suitable parameters for Internet Protocol network intended communication device drivers were selected, and the drivers implemented. Further, a complete Internet Protocol based communication stack relying on the open source uIP was constructed. The reliability of this solution is shown to be good and the link throughput adequate. The case of integration into an existing infrastructure is demonstrated, and optional further improvements are discussed.
