Abstract
The thesis focuses on architecture practice in forests in Nordic countries. The practice mainly takes part in Finland. Finland is one of the places with the best natural beauty on earth, and it has a vast area of forests and clean lakes. For a long time, being involved in nature has helped Finnish people feel happier. In modern times, teachers, parents, and kids are in new relationships. Finnish education advocates equality for all. Parents worldwide are more and more likely to let their kids grow and learn independently. Kids are more easily adaptable to familiar or unfamiliar environments. Parents and teachers are no more protectors but guides in the kids' growing up the path. My ambition for the thesis lies in three aspects. The first aspect is to inspire architects of the kids' space design possibilities. The second is to design better indoor and outdoor environments for kids through a theoretical and practical study on their movements. The third aspect is to realize how architecture can interfere between kids, birds, and the forest. My proposal in the forest is a cluster of structures as interventions, including a shelter with colorful indoor spaces for based and visiting kids, an outdoor playground, a pavilion, and a bird-watching tower. They have flexible connections with each other. I hope people could find a way to travel this route enjoying their free time in the forests. The thesis also investigates and explores the interaction between kids and birds through architectural ways when kids are observers. To explore thesis contents, I begin with reading interdisciplinary literature, doing online and field case studies, and making hand-drawings and physical models' research. I believe that as a kid, you learn by playing. As a kid, you invent new games and movements. And you are your bodily movements. I think it's essential to offer a few basic playrooms of different characteristics to help kids play and grow by themselves.Description
