Abstract
Virtual Reality emerges as a new visualization tool, which calls for investigation into the possibilities of the technology in relation to the field of production design. How can VR support and improve spatial sketching for the production designer, and what advantages or disadvantages does it have compared to other means of sketching? Focusing on the theory and goals for employing Virtual Reality, the aim of the work is to stay relevant even with future technical advancement. Furthermore the thesis is aiming to open a discussion of how and when to use Virtual Reality in the design process of a production designer. To test the possibilities of Virtual Reality sketching, rapid intuitive sketches was created in Tiltbrush and compared in a qualitative analysis to previous sketching experiences. Sketching in Tiltbrush proved useful in the initial stages of sketching, providing new ideas ocurring through spatial sketching early on. Further in the process the application proved less useful as it was hard to adjust the sketch and work with precise measurements and correct scale. Using Virtual Reality from the beginning of a sketching process can help to think three-dimensionally early on, making it a useful tool for rough spatial sketches. Having the body immersed in the sketch through Virtual Reality headset, using intuitive hand and arm gestures for drawing, and 1:1 scale possibility of the model connects the body to the sketch, improving the understanding of the space. While Virtual Reality has potential, current technical limitations in hardware and software makes traditional sketching methods more useful at this moment in later stages of designing a space. Accessibility to Virtual Reality and the type of production affects the general usefulness as well.Description
