Abstract
Narrative architecture employs a methodology that infuses inhabitants' lives with meaning by crafting a coherent story. This story elucidates the historical evolution of urban environments. In this context, CITY OBSERVER champions the integration of future potentialities as a foundational concept and guiding principle in design. This approach seeks to develop and synthesize environmental programs, enhancing our understanding of them. This thesis delves into the development, decline, and prospective future of the city, drawing on Eliel Saarinen's perspectives on urban decay and prospects for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. The design objectives focus on envisioning the city as a dynamic entity evolving towards the future. This vision prioritizes the human element and liveability. The thesis emphasizing innovative observation and interpretation of urban spaces, by integrating these contributions, this work will generate a 'map of intensities' to highlight the diverse experiences within the Helsinki metropolitan area. To reconstruct the historical framework for narrative architecture, the Munkkiniemi-Haaga plan is selected as a case study. Concurrently, Rem Koolhaas' influential work, "Delirious New York" provides a foundational perspective for urban methodology, influencing how cities might be conceptualized and developed. It stands as a testament to architectural imagination, advocating for critical thought, a discerning study of historical and contemporary contexts, and the exploration of alternative perspectives on perception and lifestyle. This thesis aims to scrutinize specific historical elements of the Munkkiniemi-Haaga plan, constructing a coherent narrative. Utilizing this narrative, the paper proposes a design approach that seeks to enhance and progress the current trajectory.Description
