Abstract

Much of the knowledge from the process of single person animated films has been delivered only by word of mouth, in other words, learned from other professionals in the field. Resources about animation technology and the most notable animation artists of their time are available in the form of books and articles about animation history, but very little information regarding the surrounding factors affecting the outcome of single person animation art has been recorded in written form. Only in recent years, the field of Animation research has expanded to cover the plurality of Animation as a field of academic study. This written thesis documents the practice based research that took part during the production of my artistic thesis film, Lähemmäs - Closer (2024) (later referred also just Closer). It studies the process of collecting influences and ideas and what kind of thinking was involved in assembling them, through my personal filter, to the form of an animated film. It documents how I integrated the advice I received during the process, and opens a view to my life situations at that time, affecting the outcome. I use plenty of introspection as a tool to reflect my choices and to analyse the thesis process. This Aalto University - School of Arts, Design and Architecture Master’s thesis in Animation is descriptive rather than prescriptive, as the solutions and methods were the ones that worked for me during the production process of Lähemmäs - Closer. I have documented the practical and artistic decision making process during the production of my Master’s thesis film meticulously. I conducted my research mainly with a autoethnographic methodology, in order to facilitate the various factors affecting the final outcome of a single artist short film. Many of the discoveries that this thesis documents, may seem obvious in retrospect, but the wisdom behind these discoveries becomes much more apparent, when one understands the background and the steps I’ve made in the thinking path. In order to facilitate the documenting of the thinking process, this written Master’s thesis features autobiographical features, as does the thesis film, but it also documents and establishes connections that Closer has to cinema theory and to animation and computer graphics technology. It also portrays the advancements in digital content creation technology as an enabler of a single artist or any low-budget computer animation project. The very definition of a short film varies from experimental, procedural noise patterns to hand-crafted narrative cinema, and the requirements to complete the required steps to produce each vary just as much. In one sense, anyone can make a short film alone, but at the other end of the spectrum, there are films that require a vast amount of skills from multiple disciplines in animation filmmaking. Closer is a film that grew from a modest framework of an idea to a challenging animation project, and its reception in festival distribution will show if I have managed to make a film that connects to its audience.
