Abstract
Notions on Portrayal - Researching Finishes as a Visual Tool in Knitwear is a Masters thesis work, that researches the creative and aesthetic role of textile finishing methods within knitted textiles using a practice-based research approach and applied textile thinking. Recognizing the abilities that textile finishings have to better the technical and performance-based qualities of textiles and the hisory behind the, this research emphasizes textile finishes’ value as design tools that contribute to the visual and conceptual depth of textile and garment creation. The research is structured in two primary parts, firstly a literary component following by a production-based artistic project. In the literary part this thesis explains the theoretical basis of finishing techniques. This component sets the foundation for the artistic process and reflects on the transmission of embodied knoweledge in the field. The artistic project builds on this foundation by exploring finishing processes as means of visual storytelling in knitwear. The project draws inspiration on the bigger conversation and a longtime feeling of women being looked at and experiencing ourselves trough this particular gaze that is born from the eyes of men. The project consists of knitted garments that investigate how finishes shape both the sensory and narrative qualities of textiles.The artistic research is supported by an semi-structured interview with a textile design professional in order to widen the objective designers perspective. In the production component the experimentation is conducted trough an iterative design process, where experimental prototyping enables the testing, reflection and development of textile outcomes in direct dialoque with material behaviour. By working within the borderlines of technical processes and visual storytelling, this research contributes to a boarder understanding of how finishes can shape not only the structural and physichal abilities, but also the aestethic storytelling potetial within textile practice.Notions on Portrayal – Viimeistykset neulevaatteissa on maisterin opinnäytetyö, joka tutkii tekstiilien viimeistelymenetelmien luovaa ja esteettistä roolia neuletekstiileissä käyttäen käytäntölähtöistä tutkimusotetta ja soveltavaa tekstiiliajattelua. Opinnäyte tutkii viimeistelymenetelmien kykyä parantaa neulekankaiden teknisiä ja toiminnallisia ominaisuuksia, keskittyen erityisesti viimeistyksiin visuaalisina sekä narratiivisina työkaluina. Tutkimus rakentuu kahdesta pääosasta: kirjallisesta osuudesta sekä taiteellisesta produktiosta. Kirjallisessa osassa avataan viimeistelytekniikoiden teoreettista taustaa ja luodaan perusta taiteelliselle prosessille. Taiteellinen projekti syventää tätä perustaa tarkastelemalla viimeistelyprosesseja visuaalisen kerronnan välineinä neulevaatteissa. Projektissa syntyneet neulevaatteet tutkivat, kuinka viimeistely vaikuttaa sekä tekstiilin aistillisiin että kerronnallisiin ominaisuuksiin. Taiteellista tutkimusta tukee haastattelu tekstiilisuunnittelun ammattilaisen kanssa, jonka tarkoituksena on laajentaa suunnittelijan näkökulmaa objektiivisempaan suuntaan. Taiteellisessa produktiossa tutkimus ja suunnittelu toteutetaan iteratiivisen suunnitteluprosessin kautta, jossa kokeellinen prototypointi mahdollistaa lopputulosten testaamisen, reflektoinnin ja kehittämisen vuoropuhelussa materiaalin käyttäytymisen kanssa. Työskentelemällä teknisten prosessien ja visuaalisen kerronnan rajapinnoilla tämä tutkimus laajentaa ymmärrystä siitä, kuinka viimeistelyt voivat muokata paitsi tekstiilien rakenteellisia ja fyysisiä ominaisuuksia, myös niiden esteettistä ja tarinallista potentiaalia.Description
