Abstract

This thesis explores the intersection of trust, information accuracy, and design in digital environments, specifically within the digital platform trivago. It examines how user-centered design principles can be applied to foster trust towards the product as a whole and improve the trustworthiness of information presented to users. The work begins with an initial introduction clarifying the scope of the implementation and the research questions, then proceeds to provide an overview of existing theoretical frameworks and models of trust, focusing on their application to digital platforms. This includes exploring how trust is built and maintained in online environments and identifying factors that can undermine it. This review of relevant literature helps in identifying strategies and best practices for designing reliable digital systems to apply in order to increase trivago's trust relationship with its users. The thesis then proceeds by emphasizing the need to understand user behaviors and preferences to create digital experiences that are both functional and trustworthy. It discusses how, through the application of a user-centred approach, several improvements were made to the trivago product, including the introduction of filters to facilitate relevant content consumption, consistency enhancements aiming at cross-device parity in the user interface, and the implementation of usability optimisations within the context of image processing, with the objective of enhancing its trustworthiness. Results from A/B testing with users are then discussed to provide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of these design modifications in increasing user trust.
