Abstract

This thesis explores the mobility patterns and mobile data usage of customers in the Finnish telecom market. As the dependence on mobile devices and data-enabled services grow, telecom companies face intense competition on providing customers smooth mobile services. Optimizing the costly mobile network infrastructure to cope with the spatial and temporal fluctuations in network demand is a big challenge for mobile network operators, where it becomes crucial to understand where and when different customers need the network. To increase customer understanding, this thesis uses call detail records (CDRs) as a dataset to examine the mobility patterns of Finnish telecom customers, and how their mobility patterns affect their data usage. This information is then used to identify different customer clusters who share similar mobility and data usage habits. The results of this thesis shows, how customer understanding can be increased by studying customer mobility by utilizing CDRs.
