Abstract

The Smartphone's tremendous growth has resulted in high revenues for operators throughout the world but at the same time high congestion in the networks has been observed. Recent lab studies (in UMTS test network) has suggested that it is not the data utilization to be blamed but rather high Layer 3 (L3) signalling consumption of Smartphone that has bogged down the networks. This thesis presents in detail, the Smartphone signalling problem and its impact on network, and in this regard related lab measurements are presented. It has been shown through measurements how different Smartphone applications impact the control plane in 3G networks. The same signalling challenge has also been studied with LTE networks.
