Abstract

The present thesis focuses on designing a communicator concept for the elderly. This study addresses the context of use and the user needs relating to the social communications aspect of the concept. The objective is to produce from the chosen user group such information which could be used in the future projects. The target group of the empirical part of this study is elderly women who are living alone and do not own a computer. There were five participants with a mean age of 85. Three research methods have been used in this study: cultural probes, semi structured interviews and co-creation sessions. Interview sessions were conducted in the actual context at the homes of participants. The data was analysed with affinity diagrams. It was found out that the participants have preconceptions about computers. Generally the elderly felt that they do not need a computer and they did not feel excluded. The participants were pretty satisfied with their current communications. They were not interested in finding new friends but more in maintaining their current relationships. It can be concluded that in developing a communicator for the elderly, in addition to the features and usability, the question how preconceptions of the elderly can be overcome should be taken into account. The modern ICT could support the communications of the elderly. Yet more research about the subject is needed.

Tämän diplomityön aiheena on kommunikaattorin konseptin kehittäminen ikäihmisille. Työssä tutkitaan käyttökontekstia ja käyttäjien tarpeita erityisesti konseptin kommunikaatio-ominaisuuksiin liittyen. Tavoitteena on tuottaa kohteeksi valitusta käyttäjäryhmästä sellaista tietoa, jota voidaan hyödyntää tulevissa projekteissa. Diplomityön empiirisen vaiheen kohderyhmänä ovat naispuoliset ikäihmiset, jotka asuvat yksin ja jotka eivät omista tietokonetta. Osallistujia oli viisi ja heidän keski-ikänsä on 85. Tutkimuksessa on käytetty kolmea tutkimusmenetelmää: kulttuuriluotaimia, puoli-strukturoitua haastattelua ja yhdessä luomis-sessioita. Haastattelusessiot toteutettiin aidossa käyttöympäristössä osallistujien kotona. Aineisto analysoitiin samankaltaisuusdiagrammien avulla. Tuloksina löydettiin, että ikäihmisillä on ennakkoluuloja tietokoneita kohtaan. Osallistujat eivät pääsääntöisesti uskoneet, että tietokoneista olisi hyötyä heille ja toisaalta he eivät myöskään uskoneet jäävänsä mistään paitsi. He olivat melko tyytyväisiä nykyiseen kommunikointiinsa. Osallistujat eivät olleet kiinnostuneita uusien ystävien löytämisestä vaan pikemminkin nykyisten suhteiden ylläpitämisestä Johtopäätöksenä todetaan, että ikäihmisille kehitettävässä kommunikaattorissa pitää käytettävyyden ja ominaisuuksien lisäksi ottaa huomioon se, miten ikäihmisten ennakkoluulot voidaan voittaa. Moderni tieto- ja viestintätekniikka voi tukea ikäihmisten kommunikointia. Aihe vaatii kuitenkin vielä lisätutkimusta.
