Abstract

The aim of this thesis project is to study the structural and magnetic properties of Lu(Fe0.2Mn0.2Co0.2Cr0.2Ni0.2)O3 (Lu5BO) high-entropy oxide perovskite (HEOP) thin films. After having obtained and optimized the growth of the film, its structural properties have been characterized, proving that the epitaxial single-phase film has excellent crystallinity, smooth surface and uniform mixing of the 3d transition metals in the B sublattice. The overall magnetic properties of the film have been studied through the use of VSM SQUID magnetometry and an element-specific study was carried out through synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS, XMCD and XLD), revealing dominant antiferromagnetic order with weak ferromagnetic clusters given by Mn4+–O–Ni2+ superexchange interaction. This project demonstrates the strength of entropy stabilization as a material design technique, applicable also to the realization of HEOPs thin films with rare- earth ions with small atomic radii and provides new insight on the manipulation of ferroic properties in HEOPs thin films.
