Abstract
This study explores the dynamics, correlation and implication between the conceptualizations of Business Model and Open Innovation in value creation with a case study of Chinese catchup firm Huawei. Another key intention is to explore the strategic approach that how to align the appropriate business model along with open innovation strategy in synergizing innovation performance. Moreover, this study also aims at revealing the challenges, opportunities further implications for open innovation and business model in the era of globalization and digitalization. We conduct the research with mainly qualitative methodology in approaching the research problems with literature reviews, case study and theoretical proposed framework regarding to the definitions, evolutions and correlation of the two key terms: Business model and Open model. First, the theoretical finding suggests that the conceptualizations of business model and open innovation tend to be dynamic. Second, there are integrated interplays in value creation between the two conceptualizations. In other words, business model is indispensable architecture in capturing value in the open innovation. Third, linking business model and open innovation is a holistic approach. Last, its strategic to adopt the dynamic perspective in develop both the conceptualizations of open innovation and business model for further research. Furthermore, the empirical case study provides evidence of benefit of open innovation in accelerating market penetration, assimilating resource, technology and knowledge and enhancing core capability. Therefore, embracing the open innovation for firm and nation in order to catchup is crucial. In addition, it’s indispensable for firm to redesign and redevelop the business model continuously and utilize the disruptive technology in leveraging innovation performance, quality of product & service and enhance customer experience and further keep pace with innovation. The finding from this study also implies the importance of nurturing the unique innovation paths according to national context and firm’s own situation. Moreover, it’s imperative for policy maker enact and reinforce more transparent, open polices and open market in promoting effective open innovation and fair trade & competition and spur the radical innovation.Description
