Harmaat etäisyydet

Abstract

Taiteen maisterin opinnäytetyö Harmaat etäisyydet koostuu taiteellisesta ja kirjallisesta osasta. Taiteellinen osa koostuu Harmaat etäisyydet / The Grey of Distance -teoksesta (2023), sekä sen jatkeena olevasta Core Collapse -näyttelystä (2024). Näyttelyyn sisältyy kolme teosta: Veistoskokonaisuus Kehänkiertäjät / Orbital Travelers, sekä kaksi valokuvatekniikoihin pohjautuvaa teosta Harmaat etäisyydet / The Grey of Distance ja Yötaivas ja Betelgeuse / Night Sky with Betelgeuse.

Sekä taiteellisen että kirjallisen osan lähtökohtana on jättiläistähti Betelgeusen kuoleman odotus. Lähestyvä tähden supernovaräjähdys toimii opinnäytetyön kirjallisessa osassa filosofisena alustana valokuvan luonteen tarkasteluun kestollisuuden ja materiaalisuuden näkökulmasta, sekä siitä aukeaviin menetyksen, etäisyyden ja luopumisen teemojen käsittelyyn.

Henkilökohtaisesta menetyksen kokemuksesta liikkeelle lähtevä teksti kurottaa kohti kysymystä valokuvan mahdollisuudesta toimia kollektiivisen surun kohtaamisen väylänä ekokatastrofin myötä tuhoutuvan maailman äärellä. Taiteelliseen osioon liittyvien teosten kautta tarkasteltu valokuvan materiaalisuus ja ylimuistoisuus johdattelee tekstissä pohdintaan valokuvan merkityksestä jälkifossiilisella aikakaudella.

Tekstin kautta valokuva näyttäytyy perimmiltään ihmiskeskeisen näkökulman ja ihmisen hallinnan ulkopuolella olevana kuvan syntymisen muotona, joka sellaisena sisältää potentiaalin asenteiden ja ajattelun muutokseen kohti kestävämmälle pohjalle rakentuvaa tulevaisuutta.

The Master of Arts thesis Harmaat etäisyydet / The Grey of Distance consists of an artistic and a literary part. The artistic part consists of the work The Grey of Distance (2023), and its extension, the exhibition Core Collapse (2024). The exhibition includes three works: The sculptural work Orbital Travelers, and two works based on photographic techniques, The Grey of Distance and Night Sky with Betelgeuse.

Both the artistic and literary parts are based on the anticipation of the death of the giant star Betelgeuse. The approaching supernova explosion of the star serves as a philosophical platform for the artistic part of the thesis to examine the nature of photography from the perspective of durationality and materiality, and the themes of loss, distance and abandonment that emerge from it.

Starting from a personal experience of loss, the text reaches towards the question of the possibility of photography as a collective way of facing grief in a world destroyed by ecological disaster. The materiality and immemoriality of photography, explored through the works in the artistic work, leads the text to a reflection on the meaning of photography in the post-fossil age.

Through the text, the photograph is seen as a form of image-making that is beyond human centric perspective and beyond human control, and as such holds the potential to change attitudes and thinking towards a future built up on a more sustainable ground.
