Abstract

This thesis describes and analyses design principles of commonly used sheet metal screw joint techniques in drive electronics, and as a part of the design analysis a test setup was developed. The test setup is intended for measuring torque values that are needed in the analysis of correct tightening torques in the screw joints. The inspected joint types included joints with self-tapping screws, nut insert joints and joints with threaded draw holes. As a special investigation, a joint type called High Torque Fastener System (HTFS) is also discussed in this thesis as a possible joining technique to be incorporated in drive assemblies. The design analysis is done by literary research on the current aspects of sheet metal joint designing and the analysis is extended to an experimental test of the torque values. As result, joint and screw specific design features are presented in this thesis and available design principles are described In general. Also, the designed and implemented test setup is depicted and torque measurement results are presented from the test setup. Torque measurement results shows how the test setup can be used to determine correct tightening torques for a self-tapping screw joint and how the driving speed of the screw affects the measured values. Measuring functional torque values from nut insert joints, threaded draw hole joints and HTFS joints are additionally discussed.
